bus from maputo to nelspruit

Monday, January 31st, 2005

Got the translux bus 7.45am from Maputo to Nelspruit. Arriving at the bus stop 30 mins early is probably a good idea. Breakfast provided. 120 rands single.

Border took about an hour in total. Got in to nelspruit at about 11am.

Translux’s timetable is here.

I think intercape also run a service.

macworld: macmini vs a cheap pc

Thursday, January 20th, 2005

MacCentral: The Mac mini: Comparing Apples and Oranges.

“Once you take a hard look at the mythical “$400 Dell,â€? it becomes clear that to make it somewhat comparable to the Mac mini, you have to add a dedicated video card, DVD/CDRW capability, FireWire, Windows XP Pro, anti-virus protection, a longer warranty, and some decent software.”

guardian: computer program predicts song success

Tuesday, January 18th, 2005

Guardian | Together in electric dreams - A computer program is changing the face of the music business by allowing record labels to predict a hit at the click of a mouse. … HSS’s crucial design flaw is that it can only look at the past. Those “leftfield”, illogical and grassroots-inspired departures from the norm, such as disco or drum and bass, could not have been predicted.

casino salsa clips at salsacasino.com

Friday, January 7th, 2005

Some Casino-style Salsa Video clips. Casino style seems to be where they dance in a circle and swap partners. See the very cheesy film “dance with me” for some cool moves.

Most of the clips currently available are terrible quality - very small, distant and and unclear.

However, the clip currently second from the bottom entitled “2.5 minutes of Casino Dancing 1on1” is very good. (21 meg).

Tracking your audience while lecturing

Thursday, January 6th, 2005

A nice tip from Mike Clark, who gives the audience of his lectures coloured things to hold up to indicate “struck a chord” and “you lost me”. Appealing to your learning style. “Another purpose of the pipe cleaners is to keep the hands of the kinesthetic learners engaged while the auditory learners are listening and the visual learners are watching.”

US tsunami aid: one and a half day’s spending in Iraq

Tuesday, January 4th, 2005

“The money pledged for the tsunami disaster by the United States is the equivalent of one and a half day’s spending in Iraq. The money the UK has given equates to five and a half days of our involvement in the war.” - Guardian: The victims of the tsunami pay the price of war on Iraq.

Must take Monbiot up on one thing, I suppose - he mentions just the cash and it’s not cheap to also dispatch two aircraft carriers each with 5000 personnel? to the area as I understand the US have done. Still, it’s a tiny fraction of US / UK expenditure in Iraq, where we’re killing people.
