The Need To Remain Still, aka No Vertical Hold

Monday, May 23rd, 2005

On Friday night, when out at club (in Maputo), I had the third visit in about 4 years from a really freaky balance problem, which would sound a lot like viral labyrinthitis, only that the max time it has ever lasted with me is about 2.5 days, and this time I was 99% ok after just 12 hours sleep.

Thankfully my friend Cameron was at the club to get me home. Iiissh, the simple car ride was a monster roller-coaster. In the past I’ve had to complete a 15-minute walk during the on-set of an attack, and that was a total a comedy moment. But at least back then I was in 50% control.

Normally, the vision in one eye just does something between barrel-rolls, or an impression of no vertical hold on a television, and the lucky recipient veers off to one side, using the wall, railing, scared club-goers, or fast passing cars as support on the way to Quiet Blessed Place of No Movement.

It was a very scary thing the first time. Now that it seems to alway pass, and that I’ve put together that it’s not a mis-firing brain, it’s just a Super-Nuisance.

Anyway, just a pointer to the already mentioned post on this problem, which is half-decent. More generally on dizziness.

Update (years later): When I later returned to the UK, the condition was diagnosed (mostly by process of elimination) as Ménière’s. The attacks in my case caused permanent hearing loss, so if the symptoms are familiar, get them checked out!
